Laying Hen Trial – Towards More Sustainable Egg Production
Project Update: Progress of the European OMELETTE Project
About OMELETTE:
OMELETTE is a European project led by the Experimental Poultry Center (EPC) in Belgium. Its main goal is to overcome barriers to extending the productive lifespan of laying hens. The project also aims to enhance the resilience of poultry farming systems by ensuring animal health, welfare, and the economic viability of farms.
Project Timeline :
Start: November 2023 | End: May 2028
2024 Highlights:
Q1: Kick-off meeting held in the Netherlands.
Q2 & Q3: Scientific literature review by INNOZH (Maeliss Brunon) and a field survey conducted jointly by INNOZH (Aurélie Derunes) and the Brittany Chamber of Agriculture (Félicie Aulanier). The survey targeted a representative panel of stakeholders across various farming models: farmers, genetics, feed, health, equipment, and egg packing centers.
Objective: Identify obstacles and opportunities for extending laying cycles in hens.
Q4: Survey results presented at the ITAVI Day – Eggs & Laying Hens event in Pacé (France) on December 5, 2024.
